Derek Sullivan: Booklover
February 24 to April 23, 2017
Dunlop Central Gallery, 2311-12th  Avenue
Artist Talk and Reception: Friday, February 24, 6:00 pm
Curated by Jennifer Matotek, Director/Curator

For nearly two decades, books have been a central concern of interdisciplinary artist Derek Sullivan’s art practice. Booklover brings together, for the first time, a speculative retrospective of Sullivan’s bookworks.

Sullivan’s installation, comprised of books on tables, a wall drawing, and suspended books and artworks, occupies the entire gallery, asking the viewer to shift their gaze throughout the space. In shifting the viewer’s attention upwards, downwards, and side to side, Booklover engages the viewer physically and intellectually as the viewer looks at his art in the way we might read, and consider, a book. The large-scale wall drawings, produced onsite with an assistant, remind us that while books are important it is the human presence – the hand and the intellect of both the author and the reader – that makes the book, a book.

Media are invited to schedule an interview with Derek Sullivan on Thursday, February 23. An artist talk by Sullivan will be held on Friday, February 24 at 6:00 pm at Central Library, RPL Film Theatre, followed by a reception for Booklover.
