Riddance represents a shift in local artist Christopher Campbell Gardiner’s remarkably consistent, process-based, and deeply personal work. For nearly twenty-five years, Gardiner has encased objects that are a source or symbol of personal anxieties by wrapping them in cottons, encasing them in lead lined boxes, wrapping the boxes in fastidiously hand-stitched cloth, and sealing the boxes airtight with layers of paint. Through this lengthy process, Gardiner attempts to ease the pain that might be triggered by the objects he contains.

For this exhibition, members of the public contributed letters explaining personal anxieties or fears, which are being encased by the artist onsite in the gallery. Through this act, Gardiner hopes that he can facilitate an unburdening – a riddance – of the traumas held deep inside of others living in his community. Gardiner will be in attendance throughout the exhibition, Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Media are also invited to schedule an interview with the artist between April 6 and June 13. A closing reception for Riddance will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 1:00 pm.
