Transmundane, an ambitious group exhibition which spans both Dunlop Gallery locations, features artworks that describe, simulate, or stimulate transcendental experience. As the exhibition title suggests, the mystical and mysterious can be found just beyond the mundane. There are countless ways that one might access these realms, be it with psychedelics and other drugs that alter perception, with religious, spiritual, and magical practices that attempt communication with the divine, or with clinical therapies that seek to understand and control the subconscious.
The world is not mundane. It is fantastic, and horrible and wonderful. As it becomes increasingly complex and more difficult to sort truth from lies, there has been a renewed interest in seeking the transcendent, both amongst artists and in popular culture. The exhibition suggest that tuning in, turning on, and dropping out has a profoundly political dimension: focusing inward when the world outside overwhelms, or focusing outward to find the magical within the mundane are both coping strategies and acts of protest.
The curators and artists Deborah Edmeades and Brendan Schick are available for interviews on Wednesday and Thursday, July 5 and 6. Opening night events take place on Friday, July 7, starting with a walking tour of Pop Up Downtown (presented in partnership with Regina Downtown Business Improvement District) leaving Central Library at 6:00 pm. A reception for both projects, and a performance by Edmeades follow at Central Library, starting at 8:00 pm.
