Catherine Blackburn: Tell Me the Truth
Curated by Jennifer Matotek, Director/Curator
Exhibition Dates:
October14, 2017 to January 3, 2018, Dunlop Sherwood Gallery, 6121 Rochdale Boulevard

Catherine Blackburn’s practice is informed by her Dene and European ancestry and considers Canada’s colonial past and present through the personal lens of her family relationships and life experiences. Based in the village of Leask, Saskatchewan, Blackburn works in both traditional and contemporary media, including beadwork, quilling, photography, textiles, and painting, often combining methods and mediums in innovative ways to tell stories of personal and cultural histories often unwritten and unspoken. Works in Tell Me the Truth consider the history of the fur trade in Canada, the impact of residential schools and Catholicism on Indigenous family structures, Dene language loss and revitalization, grief and resilience, memory, and the body. Personal and political, Blackburn’s beautifully crafted works memorialize, record, and reclaim histories and cultural practices that colonialism attempts to erase.

Media are invited to schedule an interview with Blackburn on Friday, October 13. Tell Me the Truth opens Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 pm, with Blackburn leading an introductory bead looming class at RPL Sherwood Village Branch. Workshop registration is required.
