RPL hosts expert panel to discuss the future and impact of #metoo

Last year, thousands of survivors of sexual assault shattered the silence by coming forward with their stories, embracing with courage the #metoo movement. It was an historical cultural moment. But what happens next?

Regina Public Library dives into the debate by introducing our first Hot Topics, taking place at 7:00 pm on January 9 at the RPL Film Theatre.

Hot Topics is a new monthly panel discussion series hosted by RPL the first Tuesday of each month. It features exciting conversations about current events and relevant issues, led by guest speakers from the community. Topics and speakers are announced one week in advance of each event.

On January 9, RPL will host panelists Melissa Coomber-Bendtsen, CEO of YWCA Regina, Hirsch Greenberg from the University of Regina Justice Studies Faculty, and Geri Linton, board member of the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Women’s Circle. This group of experts will discuss #metoo, its impact on the local and national cultural perspectives, and its future.

The community is invited to join the discussion, which will be followed by a free screening of Canadian film A Better Men¸ directed by Attiya Khan and Lawrence Jackman, dealing with the roots and consequences of domestic violence.

Hot Topics is one of the many ways in which we seek to engage the community in important cultural discussions,” says Jeff Barber, Library Director and CEO. “A fundamental part of our mandate as a library is to provide a space in which people and ideas meet. With Hot Topics, we are bringing together experts and the community to discuss some of the most current and significant ideas in our society.”

Hot Topics takes place at 7:00 pm the first Tuesday of every month at the RPL Film Theatre.
