Director presents award-winning portrait of life on the streets

Regina Public Library is pleased to welcome acclaimed director Hugh Gibson, who will present his award-winning film, The Stairs, at a series of RPL Film Theatre screenings from January 25 to 28.

Winner of the Toronto Film Critics Association – Best Canadian Film award, The Stairs weaves together the stories of three social workers who themselves survived decades of street involvement, to create a humane portrait of life on the streets.

Shot over the course of five years in Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood, the film follows social workers Marty, Greg and Roxanne as they perform outreach work in their old neighbourhood, using their experiences to help ease the journeys of others, while struggling to maintain their own newfound stability.

First-time filmmaker Gibson takes a compassionate and deeply affecting look at addiction and homelessness, and the community outreach workers who face these issues daily.

“It’s an important film that is very timely, and relevant to Regina,” said RPL Film Theatre Supervisor, Belinda New.

Gibson is currently touring with the film. He will introduce each screening and participate in discussion sessions to follow. Gibson is also available for interviews with the media from January 25 to 28.

The Stairs runs at 7:00 pm on January 25 and 27, and 9:15 pm on January 26. The series will close out with a matineé at 2:30 pm on January 28, followed by discussion. Tickets can be purchased 30 minutes prior to each screening, at the RPL Film Theatre Box Office, Central Library, 2311-12th Avenue.
