Fall Greetings from SLA!

September has flown by in my work at the University of Saskatchewan. The flurry of excited and anxious students has calmed to quotidian routine. In other words, reality has sunk in!

The programs of SLA are in full swing and committee members are busy planning and organizing.

Many thanks to those who have events planned for Saskatchewan Library Week. This is a very important opportunity to profile libraries and engage communities and stakeholders.

SLA Happy Hours will take place on November 8th at various locations around the province. Mark your calendar and stay tune for details.

The members of the board will come together in mid-October to address the business of the organization. This meeting will follow up on discussions and planning from the Board Retreat held at the end of August. The retreat provided the opportunity to examine the current Strategic Plan and discuss priorities going forward. Board meetings are always fruitful in addressing the organization's business and ensuring a common focus and direction.

The upcoming provincial Government's Engagement with Public Libraries has been keeping our attention on communicating with our members and stakeholders. When faced with the task of

articulating value and participation in the life of a community, priorities are lifted up and it becomes a good exercise in evaluating and prioritizing. SLA is anticipating an active role in the engagement and as the process unfolds, we will communicate with you to the extent possible.

Executive Directors Report - October 1, 2018

The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is pleased to accept applications for the Maureen Woods Education Bursary. This bursary was made possible with the generous donation from the Saskatchewan Provincial Library and Literacy Office, Saskatchewan Ministry of Education and through the efforts of the Multitype Library Board and SLA. The bursary was established to promote the continued growth of professional librarianship in the province of Saskatchewan. The bursary is administered by the Saskatchewan Library Association. SLA is offering a single bursary in the amount of $5,000.Deadline for applications is October 30, 2018.

Applications for Continuing Education Grants Due February 15, 2019

Have a great idea for a workshop for library staff? Interested in attending a conference, workshop, or professional development opportunity?  SLA offers Continuing Education (CE) grants to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members.  Applications for CE category one, two, and three grants are now being accepted.  All applications are due by February 15th, 2019.  Details are available on the website.

An invitation to help improve access to legal information for Saskatchewan residents

Saskatchewan library staff are invited to participate in the next phase of the Saskatchewan Access to Legal Information Project (the SALI Project).

As you may be aware, the objective of the SALI Project

is to increase access to legal information for Saskatchewan residents through a collaboration between justice and library stakeholders in Saskatchewan. The SALI Project partners hosted a conference on October 20-21, 2017, during the Second Annual Saskatchewan Access to Justice Week. The primary purpose for the event was to bring together a large number of public library representatives from rural, remote, and small urban centres in Saskatchewan as well as experts in the topic area, to further address how greater access to legal information can be achieved through partnering with libraries. Title: Marketing Librarian

Born and lived: Dundurn, SK (age 0-8); Saskatoon, SK (8-23); Montreal, QC (23-25); Saskatoon, SK (25-present)

Early Life: Before becoming a librarian I lived the life of a perpetual student. My undergraduate degree is in History and I completed my MLIS at McGill University.

Professional career and activities: My position at Sask Polytech Library has two parts, I am the Marketing Librarian for the entire Sask Polytech Library system - in this role I plan events, work with the institution's C&M department to develop promotions and oversee communications. My other role is that of liaison to specific programs in Saskatoon, including Adult Education, LINC, and the Library Technician diploma program. In this role I provide students and faculty with the tools they need to be successful educators and students. Providing these supports manifests in a variety of ways, one example is library instruction. Read more

• Call for Submissions: Saskatchewan Book Awards

Submissions are now open for the 26th Saskatchewan Book Awards! Books that were published by Saskatchewan authors or publishers on or after November 1, 2017 and no later than October 31, 2018 are eligible, except in the case of the Young Adult Literature Award, which is open to books that were published on or after November 1, 2016 and no later than October 31, 2018. Please consider applying online through their website at www.bookawards.sk.ca.
